Roberta Flack first heard the song on a flight from Los Angeles to New York City (where Lori Lieberman’s version was featured on the in-flight audio program). In September of 1972, Roberta was opening up for Marvin Gaye at the Greek Theater. After she performed the encore song she prepared, Marvin advised her to sing another song. According to Roberta: I said well, I got this song I’ve been working on called ‘Killing Me Softly’ and he [Marvin Gaye] said ‘Do it, baby’ And I did and the audience went crazy, and he walked over to me and put his arm around me and said, ‘Baby, don’t ever do that song again live until you record it.’“ Roberta’s version of “Killing Me Softly” was released in January of 1973. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in February of 1973 and later for a week in March of 1973. She won two Grammy Awards in 1973 for “Record of the Year” and “Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.” Mijn pijn bespelend met zijn vingers Mijn leven bezingend met zijn woorden Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Vertelt mijn hele leven Met zijn woorden Mij zachtjes dodend met zijn lied Ik hoorde dat hij een mooi lied zong Ik hoorde dat hij stijl had En dus kwam ik om hem te zien en een tijdje te luisteren En daar was hij, deze jonge vent En vreemdeling in mijn ogen Mijn pijn bespelend met zijn vingers Mijn leven bezingend met zijn woorden Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Vertelt mijn hele leven Met zijn woorden Mij zachtjes dodend met zijn lied Ik voelde mij gloeien van koorts In verlegenheid gebracht door het publiek Ik voelde dat hij mijn brieven had gevonden en las elke luid op Ik bad dat hij zou stoppen Maar hij ging maar door Mijn pijn bespelend met zijn vingers Mijn leven bezingend met zijn woorden Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Vertelt mijn hele leven Met zijn woorden Mij zachtjes dodend met zijn lied Hij zong alsof hij mij kende In al mijn duistere wanhoop En toen keek hij dwars door mij heen Alsof ik er niet was En hij bleef door zingen Zong helder en krachtig Mijn pijn bespelend met zijn vingers Mijn leven bezingend met zijn woorden Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Vertelt mijn hele leven Met zijn woorden Mij zachtjes dodend met zijn lied ohhhhhhhhhhh oohhhhhhh...lalalal..ohhhh lalaaaaaaa Mijn pijn bespelend met zijn vingers Mijn leven bezingend met zijn woorden Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Vertelt mijn hele leven Met zijn woorden Mij zachtjes dodend Hij bespeelde mijn pijn met zijn vingers Ja, hij bezong mijn leven Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Mij zacht dodend met zijn lied Vertelt mijn hele leven met zijn woorden Mij zachtjes dodend met zijn lied I heard he sang a good song I heard he had a style And so I came to see him To listen for a while And there he was this young boy A stranger to my eyes Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song I felt all flushed with fever Embarassed by the crowd I felt he found my letters And read each one out loud I prayed that he would finish But he just kept right on Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song He sang as if he knew me In all my dark despair And then he looked right through me As if I wasn't there But he was there, this stranger Singing clear and strong Strumming my pain with his fingers Singing my life with his words Killing me softly with his song Killing me softly with his song Telling my whole life with his words Killing me softly with his song 12 jaar geleden voor het laatst gewijzigd heeft toestemming van Stichting FEMU om deze songtekst te tonen.
